Looking to curb your alcohol intake? Whether you’re just trying to take a break to get in shape or looking into something more permanent, there’s no question about the benefits of an alcohol-free lifestyle. While the benefits are clear, in practice it can be quite a challenge. Be it for work or social engagements, we are perpetually pressured to drink on a daily basis. So what can one do to help curb their drinking habits?
1 – PUT IT IN WRITING
Write down your reasons for wanting to curtail your drinking habits. Things like living a healthier lifestyle, improving your relationships, or getting better sleep are all good reasons to ditch the booze. Writing these things down can be a powerful tool to remembering why you wanted to curb your drinking in the first place.
2 – DON’T KEEP ALCOHOL IN YOUR HOUSE
This might seem like a no-brainer, but having alcohol on hand might lead you to fall off the wagon the second you encounter a stressful situation. Give whatever alcohol you have in your house to friends and family, or simply dump it down the drain.
3 – WATCH FOR PEER PRESSURE
Think of ways to say no politely in social or work settings. You do not have to drink just because the people around you are, and you shouldn’t feel obligated to do so. If you feel out of place without a drink in your hand, try one of the many great alcohol alternatives on the market or simply ask for a club soda with lime.
4 – KEEP BUSY
Pick up a hobby, exercise, or read instead of drinking. These activities are all more productive (and usually cheaper) than drinking and can be useful tools for relieving stress when you would otherwise turn to alcohol.
5 – BE PERSISTENT
Most people who are successful at curbing their drinking habits have hiccups along the way. It’s important to remember your long-term goals when you experience setbacks and take things one day at a time. Every day you go without a drink is a win!
